LOVE: Zoe Kravitz at the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Dinner

Posted in By Em, LOVE by styleinspades on May 1, 2010
On April 28th, Zoe Kravitz was photographed at the Odeon for the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Dinner in support of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards Program:

Here are some quotes from an interview Zoe had earlier this week with the Huffington Post:
.

.

.

On her tattoos:
“My favorite is my anchor. I also have my brother and sister’s name, my parents’ initials, some feathers and arrows and the word Mama from a letter my mother wrote to me.”
.
The best place to shop in New York:
“I’m pretty much a thrift shop gal. Flea markets on Sundays. There’s the Annex on 26th Street and Hell’s Kitchen on 39th Street. Alexander Wang is my favorite and my best friend and then Trash & Vaudeville on Saint Mark’s Place.”
.
What she’s reading:
“I read a lot of biographies. I’m reading Patti Smith’s book right now, Just Kids, and Jeff Buckley is one of my favorites. I just read a biography on him.”

Earlier that day, Zoe attended the opening of the Fifth Avenue Sunglass Hut flagship store:

LOVE: Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 RTW

Posted in By Em, LOVE by styleinspades on February 16, 2010
Obligatory Marc Jacobs RTW post. They say his show is the hottest in New York. Whoever they are…they should also add Alexander Wang (everything he makes reaches “it” level status) and Betsey Johnson (she really knows how to put on a show).

.

Anyways, here are my “Top Four” from the Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 RTW collection:

.

.

.

.

This collection was great in that some of the cuts were very conservative (below the knee hem lines, high waists, etc.) but the materials made them modern. Take this coat for example:
It’s a classic cut. Yet the sparkling, transparent material gives it a twist & makes it innovative. MJ is able to mix contradictory elements in a way that no other designer can.

LOVE: Vena Cava Fall 2010- Cabin Fever Worth Catching

Posted in By Em, LOVE by styleinspades on February 12, 2010
The first show I attended today was Vena Cava, held at Milk Studios:

Vena Cava Fall 2010 from Style In Spades

“We secluded ourselves in a house in Woodstock one long weekend. After researching the work of Shelia Hicks and female artists of the 70s craft movement, we designed a collection for the Vena Cava woman to wear in her cabin upstate: pieces that read more minimal, American, 70s tinged and somewhat classic, but with singular Vena Cava detailing and a hazy, rainy day color palette. ” So said the below press sheet:

Take a look at some of my pictures from the show:

^My seat. There were ear plugs placed on the benches… in case people didn’t want to hear the band, I suppose?

Fishnets. Fur. Red lips & leather. Perfection.

.

Do you realize how difficult this is going to be now, to have to wait for these to become available?! If I can’t have the wardrobe just yet, I guess I could settle for some purple hair streaks…

Check out Lisa & Sophie’s blog Viva Vena Cava for….well just because it’s cool, really.

WTF PHOTO: Miley Cyrus Wants a New Furry Bag

Posted in By Em, WTF PHOTO by styleinspades on January 29, 2010
Hey People! I’m adding a new feature. From this day forth all Fridays shall be “WTF Photo Fridays!” Alliteration at its finest.

.

Behold! Your very first WTF Photo, on this Friday, January 29th of the year 2010:

Do you see what I’m laughing about? Miley has a new puppy and everyone thinks it’s totes cute. All I see here is Miley Cyrus on her way to having a new fuzzy white bag made because she likes her grey one so much. Sick, right?
.

.

I’m not even one of those people who is particularly against fur. I’m just against ugly furry grey messenger bags (faux or not).

Can you see the desperation in the dog’s eyes?

LOVE: Gwen Does Lacoste AKA Meet Margot Tenenbaum

Posted in By Em, LOVE by styleinspades on January 26, 2010
I only just saw The Royal Tenenbaums for the first time this year. Crazy, right? For me, what made this a great movie were the sets and costumes. Margot’s style in particular interested me.

.

Maybe a bit too much. Immediately after watching the movie, I booked an appointment to have my hair cut in a Margot Tenenbaum meets Leigh Lezark style. Fast forward two months and it still hasn’t grown out.

^Young Margot

.

So, Margot. This girl knows what she likes and sticks with it. Above, Margot as a child wears a blue striped polo dress and red hair clip. Below, Margot as an adult wears a blue striped polo dress and red hair pin.

.

She also routinely wears a long fur coat, pink gloves, loafers, and carries a Birkin. She has worn this same outfit with only slight variation ever since she was 14 & bought her first pack of cigarettes. On the outside, she dresses much older than she is. Yet, beneath the coat, she still wears the Lacoste dresses she loved as a kid.
.
Her clothes show us that while in some ways she is mature beyond her years, she also never really grew up. She never had a real childhood.

Here’s a movie still I took of Margot’s closet. This was a blink and you’ll miss it situation. The focus was (clearly) on Owen Wilson’s character, who was sneaking around Margot’s closet. Notice the rows of striped Lacoste dresses and identical brown loafers.

.

The only time I noticed any change in Margot’s look was during this brief flashback of the time she ran away to Indiana to find her real family. Still wearing that same fur coat. But, it looks like she dyed her hair brown for a minute way back when.

^Round my Indiana homesteads wave the cornfields. In the distance loom the woodlands clear and cool.

.

Also, it’s interesting that Margot’s mother wears an Hermès bag. Margot carries the Birkin & her mother has the Kelly. I wonder if that’s supposed to hold some deeper significance about their relationship or if I’m just reading way too much into it.

^Ignore the emotion- it’s all about the bag
