TREND: Ballet Pink (as seen in Black Swan)
The New York Times beat me to it. I wanted my first post-hiatus post to discuss the ballet influences in late December’s Pre-Fall 2011 collections. I planned to demonstrate the trend using images from Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Alas, Ruth La Ferla has already come to the conclusion that the movie “both reflects–and anticipates” the ballet trend in fashion.
.
However, I think the article relies too much on the use of feathers in a small handful of Spring 2011 shows (Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and J. Mendel) to draw the ballet-inspired conclusion. Although feathers are relevant to the Black Swan movie, they aren’t representative of ballet in general (and what dancers wear on a regular basis). It is ballet, not the story of Swan Lake that is on the pop culture radar:

Despite the fact that feathers may become popular, I believe the bigger trend will be the color light pink as it is commonly associated with ballet (i.e. the leather slippers, satin pointe shoes and light pink tights).

BEHOLD… ballet pink:

Ballet pink was used in the Pre-Fall 2011 collections of Phillip Lim 3.1, Burberry Prorsum, Doo.Ri, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, and Oscar De La Renta:

Just for kicks… here are some more examples from the earlier Spring 2011 collections of Chanel, Proenza Schouler, D&G, Azzaro, Diane von Furstenberg, Jil Sander, Christian Dior, and Chloé:

If you’re a fan of Emma Watson, you’re likely a fan of her style too. Nobody does a red Marc by Marc military jacket, YSL serpent tee, or Comme Des Garcons polyester tulle dress like Emma. Yeah, you’ve probably noticed that her style is sort of quirky. Quirky, and damn near impossible to describe.
Thankfully, I’m a miracle worker & have come up with the Emma Watson Fashion Formula.
.
.
I’ll start with the easy stuff. Emma sure loves red lipstick. That, or she drinks a lot of cherry Kool-aid…
Below, Emma appears in Interview & Italian Vogue wearing red lipstick:

She has also taken the look and incorporated it into her own personal style
as seen at the Giles Fashion show & Cartier Polo Day event:

So you’ve run out and gotten yourself a tube of Chanel Rouge Allure or stolen your mom’s. I’m proud of you.
.
Now we can move on to the clothes. Dressing like Emma Watson really only requires one thing: money. And if you don’t have money (or won’t drop $5,000+ on a single outfit for whatever reason), then I sure hope you’re famous & can borrow from showrooms.
.
.
However, if you are neither rich nor famous you can still steal Emma’s look so long as you own this single accessory: a black high waisted belt. Ta dah! In nearly every photo I’ve seen of Emma Watson, she’s wearing a black belt around her torso. Take a look for yourself. It’s like playing Where’s Waldo, only not.

Take a look at this Christopher Kane Fall ’09 dress:

Emma wore it to David Letterman this year. However, you’ll notice below that Emma’s dress has an additional black line across the waist where the original did not.
.
Finally, before I bid adieu, I will add one more component to the Emma Watson Fashion Formula.
.
Stripes. This girl has a stripes obsession. I’ll even go so far as to say that the black belt fetishism seen above is merely a variation on the stripes theme.

See!? The black belt is a just a clever way to add a black stripe to an outfit.
.
Anyways, I like her style & hope to write more on her later.
.
Still… Even though I’ve been to fashion parties & seen shows at Bryant Park, I can’t help but to throw up in my mouth a little bit every time I see her standing all nonchalant next to Karl Lagerfeld. Or Rupert Grint.
