TREND: Ballet Pink (as seen in Black Swan)

Posted in By Emily by styleinspades on January 5, 2011
The New York Times beat me to it. I wanted my first post-hiatus post to discuss the ballet influences in late December’s Pre-Fall 2011 collections. I planned to demonstrate the trend using images from Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan. Alas, Ruth La Ferla has already come to the conclusion that the movie “both reflects–and anticipates” the ballet trend in fashion.

.

.
However, I think the article relies too much on the use of feathers in a small handful of Spring 2011 shows (Chanel, Alexander McQueen, and J. Mendel) to draw the ballet-inspired conclusion. Although feathers are relevant to the Black Swan movie, they aren’t representative of ballet in general (and what dancers wear on a regular basis). It is ballet, not the story of Swan Lake that is on the pop culture radar:

Despite the fact that feathers may become popular, I believe the bigger trend will be the color light pink as it is commonly associated with ballet (i.e. the leather slippers, satin pointe shoes and light pink tights).

.

.

BEHOLD… ballet pink:

Ballet pink was used in the Pre-Fall 2011 collections of Phillip Lim 3.1, Burberry Prorsum, Doo.Ri, Hervé Léger by Max Azria, and Oscar De La Renta:

TREND: Resort 2011 Straw Hats

Posted in By Em, TREND by styleinspades on June 13, 2010
Straw hats appeared in a number of Resort 2011 collections. Below are a few examples from Erin Fetherston, Marc Jacobs, Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Vena Cava, and Chanel:

Coco Chanel wore straw hats too. According to the Italian Vogue website, she “started out in fashion making hats as a hobby. Over the years Chanel became known for her straw hats and in particular the flat brimmed boater style typically seen on school children.”

NEXT: Kristen Stewart Elle Magazine Photo Shoot

Posted in By Em, NEXT by styleinspades on May 6, 2010
It has been way too long since my last Kristen Stewart style post. Definitely been a while since I wrote about Elle Magazine too… (major sarcasm- see last two posts)
.
Check out these behind-the-scenes photos of Kristen’s Elle Magazine shoot:

.
I hope she doesn’t become a “Chanel Girl.” Emma Watson wore Chanel practically 24/7 before she began modeling for Burberry. Diane Kruger, Rachel Bilson, and Kirsten Dunst are a few more examples. I like Chanel, but I loved the direction Kristen’s style started to take earlier this year when she wore Yigal Azrouël, mesh Balenciaga, and acid green Proenza Schouler. Now all she seems to wear is Chanel.

.

Anyways, here are some photos from the making of the creepy set:

.

.

I told you it was creepy:

.

She tells Elle “It’s insane! Once somebody finds out, you have to get the hell out of wherever you are. People freak out. And the photographers, they’re vicious.” Hence the stalker themed set. Really, this is the sort of room you’d expect to see on Law & Order…
.
She goes on to say “Somebody knocked on my hotel room door and asked for a light, then said that they were a big fan. I was like, ‘Do you really need me to light your cigarette? How do you know what room I’m in?” Who does that?

LOVE: Zoe Kravitz at the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Dinner

Posted in By Em, LOVE by styleinspades on May 1, 2010
On April 28th, Zoe Kravitz was photographed at the Odeon for the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival Dinner in support of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards Program:

Here are some quotes from an interview Zoe had earlier this week with the Huffington Post:
.

.

.

On her tattoos:
“My favorite is my anchor. I also have my brother and sister’s name, my parents’ initials, some feathers and arrows and the word Mama from a letter my mother wrote to me.”
.
The best place to shop in New York:
“I’m pretty much a thrift shop gal. Flea markets on Sundays. There’s the Annex on 26th Street and Hell’s Kitchen on 39th Street. Alexander Wang is my favorite and my best friend and then Trash & Vaudeville on Saint Mark’s Place.”
.
What she’s reading:
“I read a lot of biographies. I’m reading Patti Smith’s book right now, Just Kids, and Jeff Buckley is one of my favorites. I just read a biography on him.”

.

.

.

Earlier that day, Zoe attended the opening of the Fifth Avenue Sunglass Hut flagship store:

NEXT: Karl Lagerfeld Coca Cola Light

Posted in By Em, NEXT by styleinspades on April 3, 2010
Karl Lagerfeld Coca Cola Light will be sold at Colette for $81. The drink comes in “a unique box in limited edition, accompanied with a bottle-opener discreetly hidden in a drawer.”

Obviously, I would love my very own bottle-opener by Karl. I mean, who wouldn’t? WHO? However, I would feel incredibly strange pre-ordering a soda for $81 from Paris…
