NEXT: Guggenheim Exhibition “Julie Mehretu: Grey Area”
Earlier today I stopped by the Guggenheim for the media preview of an upcoming exhibition. Julie Mehretu: Grey Area, an exhibition of six new large-scale paintings by American artist Julie Mehretu, will be presented at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum as part of the Deutsche Bank Series at the Guggenheim, May 14 to October 6, 2010.
.
The image of Atlantic Wall (above) is from the Museum’s website.
However, as you’ll notice from my photo below, the piece looks very different in person:

.
The suite of semiabstract works in Grey Area is inspired by a multitude of sources, including historical photographs, urban planning grids, modern art, and graffiti, and explores the intersections of power, history, dystopia, and the built environment, along with their impact on the formation of personal and communal identities.

Here two more detail shots of Fragment and Berliner Plätze:

Using ink and acrylic paint, Mehretu layers detailed schematic depictions of buildings and cityscapes with abstracted forms and lines, playing with the depth of the composition. Through this layering, combined with the use of erasure and the smudging of gestural marks, structures seem to dissolve on the surface of the canvas. Julie Mehretu: Grey Area was organized by Joan Young, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art and Manager of Curatorial Affairs at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

I enjoyed the exhibition- of the six, Berliner Plätze was my favorite. It was nice outside, so I continued down Museum Mile to check out the Met’s American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity exhibition. More on that later…

NEXT: Amanda Seyfried at Letters to Juliet Premiere
Amanda Seyfried wore an RM by Roland Mouret dress from the Fall 2010 collection to the premier of her new movie, Letters to Juliet. The “Morgan” style dress is made of black stretch double crepe fabric and embellished with iridescent blue fan sequins:
Check out her dress (plus two similar looks) on the runway:
Her black lace up Elli sandals are by my new favorite shoe designer Brian Atwood. Amanda also wore a blue RM by Roland Mouret dress with black Brian Atwood heels to the premiere of Chloe in March. See previous post HERE.

NEXT: Shanghai Tang Fall Preview
Shanghai Tang has created a seasonal collection which seeks to interpret the visible evidence of a country evolving at breakneck speed. The burst of vivid coulours seen in the silk “Pixel” print mimics a satellite view of crowded cities. The abstract, artistic “Phoenix” print also evokes contemporary Chinese chic:

NEXT: Alice Temperley & Norman Parkinson Auction at Phillips de Pury
On the 18th of May, together with Annie Lennox & Simon de Pury with support from Harper’s Bazaar UK, Alice Temperley will host a private charity dinner & auction at Phillips de Pury gallery in London. Alongside the 16 limited edition canvasses will be an additional 15 Norman Parkinson prints. 100% of the proceeds of the Temperley London works and 25% of the Norman Parkinson prints will be donated to The Circle.
.
.
Alice Temperley worked to create a series of beautiful images to showcase as a part of her highly anticipated Temperley London Autumn Winter “True British” presentation. Recreating Norman Parkinson’s iconic look in her own signature, Alice worked with contemporary, quintessential, British women to shoot “True British” muses. The resulting series includes 16 images of Annie Lennox, Amanda Harlech, Sophie Dahl, Erin O’Connor, Rosamund Pike, Liberty Ross, Lily Cole and Laura Bailey.

NEXT: Kristen Stewart Elle Magazine Photo Shoot
It has been way too long since my last Kristen Stewart style post. Definitely been a while since I wrote about Elle Magazine too… (major sarcasm- see last two posts)
.
Check out these behind-the-scenes photos of Kristen’s Elle Magazine shoot:
^Chanel dress & necklace; House of Lavnde necklace worn as a belt
.
I hope she doesn’t become a “Chanel Girl.” Emma Watson wore Chanel practically 24/7 before she began modeling for Burberry. Diane Kruger, Rachel Bilson, and Kirsten Dunst are a few more examples. I like Chanel, but I loved the direction Kristen’s style started to take earlier this year when she wore Yigal Azrouël, mesh Balenciaga, and acid green Proenza Schouler. Now all she seems to wear is Chanel.
.
Anyways, here are some photos from the making of the creepy set:
I told you it was creepy:
She tells Elle “It’s insane! Once somebody finds out, you have to get the hell out of wherever you are. People freak out. And the photographers, they’re vicious.” Hence the stalker themed set. Really, this is the sort of room you’d expect to see on Law & Order…
.
She goes on to say “Somebody knocked on my hotel room door and asked for a light, then said that they were a big fan. I was like, ‘Do you really need me to light your cigarette? How do you know what room I’m in?” Who does that?

NEXT: Emma Stone in NYLON Magazine May 2010
Emma Stone is featured in the new May 2010 issue of NYLON Magazine:
^Tavi Gevinson, Emma stole your ”lemon Miu Miu naked lady collar.”
.
Emma told NYLON that she just recently pierced her ears. “Most people go through this when they’re like, 14. I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s up everybody?’ I moved to New York and got five piercings!” Emma is getting ready to promote her new film Easy A, which will never eclipse my love for Zombieland. And so… I’d like to take advantage of this rare opportunity to squeeze in some otherwise completely random photos from Zombieland:
